1: Why align your cabinet doors

Over time, your kitchen doors can sag and look misaligned. It’s a simple fix but one that can make your kitchen look much more high end. Almost every kitchen door hinge has 2 screws to adjust the door, and that’s it. Your kitchen will then look, and function, much better. This works with soft close hinges also.

2: Required tools:

  • A flat head screw driver - a PH or Phillips screwdriver may also work, depending on the hinge type

3: Aligning the doors

  • Start from one side or one cabinet door in your kitchen. Ensure this door is correct, then you can work off of that door for the others.

  • You may have 1 or 2 screws on your hinge for adjustment. You may also have a bracket with slotted screw holes for adjusting the door height, on the hinge side. This shouldn’t be necessary if the kitchen was installed properly but we will briefly explain this.

  • The first part to set, if required, is the door height on the hinge side. This is usually about 8mm below the worktop surface. To set this, loosen the screws on the bracket attached to the carcass, not the door. This will only work if they are slotted.

    • Then, lift the door to the correct height and hold it in place, whilst tightening the bracket screws. This has now set the door height.

  • Now to set the door alignment. The first screw controls the left to right axis of the door. This is used to ensure that the door looks straight and that the gaps are even on the left and right. The direction of the screw can vary so trial and error will show you how the door moves. Use the top and bottom hinges to align the door and ensure it is in the centre of the unit, otherwise when you set the door next to it, you may have some issues.

  • The second screw controls how far away from the unit carcass the door is. This means if the door is leaning towards you, or away from you, you can adjust the hinges until it is flat. If the door is rubbing on the hinge side when you open and shut it, you may want to adjust this to give the door more space to swing.

  • Top Tip: Always open and shut your door a few times after each adjustment to ensure that nothing is rubbing and it is supported properly.

  • Repeat the process until you are done! There is a lot of trial and error involved in this so be patient and you kitchen will soon look perfect.
